The spirit of going without something in aid of a good cause is alive and well in the UK. Some charities like The Salvation Army specifically refer to self-denial in their fundraising, while others simply capitalise on the idea.

Although there are seasonal times at which charities can tie in with notions of self-denial, most notably during Lent and after New Year, in fact self-denial fundraising campaigns can run successfully at any time of the year.

2. Unicef’s Live Below the Line

One billion children live below the poverty line and have to live on less than £1 a day. Unicef’s annual campaign invites people to put themselves in this position and to try to Live Below the Line on £1 of food for five days.

The money raised is used by Unicef “to help keep a child safe from hunger”.
