Macmillan launches branded Uplifting Gifting site
Macmillan Cancer Support has teamed up with online fundraising service Timto to launch a branded version of its online gift service Uplifting Gifting.
The service lets people chip in to buy a gift for a friend or family member, and the recipient then splits the money between a gift or gifts and a donation to charity. The charity receives every penny donated to them, together with Gift Aid.
Co-founder of Timto Nathan Cornish describes the platform, which is available to major charities “at no cost”, as offering “a new holistic approach to celebrating by aggregating family and friend’s gift expenditure, enabling better gifts to be bought alongside a conscious donation to charity”.
He sees it as a tool to help bridge “the Giving Gap” – the challenge faced by charities who find they are relying predominantly on people aged over 60 and who struggle to attract younger donors.
He and brother Luke Cornish were also driven to set up the gift service when they learned that about £2.5 billion is spent every year on gifts that are never used, given away or resold.
Timto is also focusing on the corporate gifts market to benefit charities. According to a recent Daily Mail article, £2.1 billion a year is spent on buying gifts for work colleagues. This works out at an average of £72 for every employee in the UK.
Ben Welch, Head of Fundraising development at Macmillan Cancer Support commented:
“We believe Uplifting Gifting has the potential to deliver significant incremental value to Macmillan, whilst allowing us to strengthen our relationships with both individual and corporate supporters.”
