Ireland’s national giving campaign asks charities to register

Howard Lake | 17 May 2013 | News

The National Giving Campaign in Ireland, which has been rebranded as the One Percent Difference Campaign, has extended its deadline for charities to be included on its website to 27 May 2013.

The One Percent Difference Campaign is being run by Philanthropy Ireland and will encourage everyone in Ireland to give 1% either financially or of their time. Philanthropy Ireland says, if taken up, this would double current giving levels.

Philanthropy Ireland is currently developing a national awareness campaign that will act as a call to action for causes all over the country and will encourage everyone to get involved.

According to Philanthropy Ireland, the problem is that not enough people in Ireland give in a considered and sustained manner which would enable charities and worthy causes to plan over the long term. The campaign hopes to reverse this downward trajectory to create a cultural shift in Irish people’s giving habits and show that every person can make a difference.

The upcoming advertising campaign will point people to ‘The One Percent Difference’ website. As well as a calculator that enables users to figure out how much 1% means to them, there will be a short questionnaire on the website that will help people decide where their 1% should go. It assesses the user’s values and priorities and matches them with causes that are likely to resonate with them.

The site will not process donations. It will simply ask users to pledge their 1% to a cause and will also provide links to the websites of the resulting organisations.
