Trustees sourced for arts organisations
Arts & Business’ new initiative Gain, which matches people with arts organisations to improve board member diversity, has matched seven people with arts organisations and aims to develop 20 new trustee-arts organisation relationships by April 2005.
Gain was established by Arts & Business, The Greater London Authority, and the Arts Council as a way of enabling a greater diversity of people on the board of mainstream arts organisations, which at present are made up of 90% white middle class middle aged men of British origin. In its first year Gain has focussed on recruiting and placing trustees of BME background.
Colin Tweedy, Chief Executive of Arts & Business said: “We have matched BME trustees on the basis of their skills and their love for art of which there is an abundance.”

Gain is centred on a group of London’s key arts organisations including The Photographers Gallery, Booktrust, Tricycle Theatre, Spitalfields Festival. If the initiative is successful it will expand to other regions after October 2005.
