DEC extends methods of giving to Tsunami Earthquake appeal

Howard Lake | 4 January 2005 | News

The Disasters Emergency Committee is now accepting donations via SMS to boost its Tsunami Earthquake emergency appeal.

Mobile phone users of the 3, orange, T-mobile, Virgin Mobile and Vodafone networks can text “DONATE” to 83321 and thereby doante £1.50 to the DEC appeal. “No further charges will be applied,” says the DEC.

The SMS approach complements the DEC’s use of the Web and phone to accept donations. In addition, it is encouraging donations by post , and any high street bank or Post Office will also accept cash, cheque or postal order donations.

Meanwhile, the DEC has secured extensive donated advertising space for skyscraper ads for its appeal on many commercial Web sites.

It is also supporting newspapers who wish to set up their own co-branded appeal for the fundraising effort. The DEC can provide such titles with a coupon to reprint in the paper, which will enable them to track all postal donations made through the campaign. Approved newspaper partners get to use a DEC logo endorsing the appeal. Unfortunately, the offer does not extend to online-only newspapers and publications. Nevertheless, the Independent newspaper has published its DEC appeal donation form from its printed paper on its Web site for downloading and printing out.
