The International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) has won the $1m 2003 Hilton Humanitarian Prize from the Conrad N Hilton Foundation.

Copenhagen-based IRCT supports a global network of more than 200 rehabilitation centres and support groups for torture victims in 80 countries, providing medical and psychosocial care to approximately
100,000 victims each year.

The world’s largest humanitarian award will be presented at a gathering of international leaders in humanitarianism and human rights featuring the Dalai Lama in New York City on 24 September 2003.

Speaking from Los Angeles, USA, Steven Hilton, President of the Conrad N.
Hilton Foundation said: “Although there
are no comprehensive statistics on the number of torture victims around
the world, conservative estimates are that of the world’s 12 million refugees alone, nearly one-third have been subjected to torture. We must then count those who have been tortured and remain in their own
countries.

“By addressing the unimaginable suffering of men, women, and even children who have endured torture, IRCT personifies the purpose of the Hilton Humanitarian Prize, which is to recognise and support the work
of organisations alleviating human suffering throughout the world.”
