Corbis announces $1 million image donation programme

Corbis is to waive up to $1 million in licensing fees for charities and non-profit organisations using images from the Bettmann Archive.
Corbis say this is the largest initiative of its kind in the image licensing industry. It forms part of the company’s year-long celebration of Otto Bettmann’s 100th birthday. Bettmann founded the archive in 1935 following his departure to the United States from Nazi Germany. The archive
is one of the world’s largest and oldest collections of photographs, containing 11.5 million images. Corbis purchased the archive in 1995. Photos in the archive range from iconic images of human history to depictions of everyday life.
European based participants will also be able to select from the Hulton Deutsch photo-library.

“It’s always our business to help clients tell stories with impact that goes
beyond words. This year it’s our privilege to help charities and non-profits
tell their own powerful stories with images from the Bettmann Archive and Hulton Deutsch collection,” said Steve Davis, Corbis chief executive officer.
Corbis is also reaching out to its own clients in this effort, encouraging
advertising agencies, design houses and publishers to draw on the image donation programme for their own charitable work.
