Independent publishes Fat Cat List 2003

The Independent has published the ‘FATSE 100’, a guide to “the good, the bad and the outrageous in boardroom pay at Britain’s 100 leading companies.”

How much do top company directors earn? Who is likely to receive a substantial cash sum upon leaving the company whether as a success or a failure? The Independent’s business and city editor, Jeremy Warner, has compiled a list of boardroom pay that could help fundraising researchers home in on wealthy prospects.

Warner explains that the figures for the remuneration package are based on basic pay plus cash and shares benefits for the company’s last reported financial year. The the increase in the transfer value of the executive’s pension has also been included.

The list compares directors’ pay with the performance of their companies in terms of shareholder returns. Warner concludes that the Fat Cat table “reasonably demonstrates that in many cases, rates of pay have little to do with performance and results.” In other words, “what a chief executive earns seems to be limited only by his powers of negotiation.”
