New edition of guide to charitable status published

The Directory of Social Change has published a new edition of one of the most popular guides to charity law.
“Charitable Status: A Practical Handbook” by Andrew Phillips, has been re-released to help charities comply with the myriad of laws
applying to them. It is aimed at trustees, charity workers, lawyers and accountants needing a working introduction to the subject.
It is written by Andrew Phillips (Lord Phillips of Sudbury) who is well known for his 26 year slot as the ‘Legal Eagle’ on Radio 2’s former Jimmy Young Show.

“Charitable Status, A Practical Handbook” is designed to make life easier for charities and would-be charities, the great majority of which have no paid staff and who therefore find it difficult to keep up with all the legal requirements and reporting.
Lord Phillips is an experienced charity lawyer at the firm Bates Wells and Braithwaite where he has advised charities large and small. He believes that the role of charity has become even more pivotal in recent years and that “the human scale, organic diversity and creativity of the charity world has become a crucial antidote to often distant bureaucracy.”
The new edition takes account of the many developments in charity law in recent years. It also covers proposals in the government¹s recent Strategy Unit Review.
Lord Phillips was assisted in writing the book by his colleague Julian Blake.
