Trócaire launches alternative Christmas gifts catalogue for third year

Howard Lake | 9 December 2002 | News

Irish charity Trócaire has launched its Global Gift Plan, an alternative Christmas gifts catalogue which lets donors ‘buy’ specific items such as an ox-plough, pig, schoolbooks, beehive, or an artificial limb.

Based on the original idea by US non-profit Heifer International, donors can buy a practical gift in the name of a friend or relative, and that item will be delivered to a family in the developing world. The relative or friend will receive an attractive personalised certificate and Christmas card confirming the gift.

Trócaire, which has been running this catalogue since 2000, sees it as “an inspired Christmas Gift which is ethical, non-commercial and life-changing… For many it has reclaimed the Christmas values of goodwill and friendship.”
