Conservation charity's volunteers hit by insurance withdrawal

Howard Lake | 4 June 2002 | News

The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) has had to stop work by two-thirds of its volunteers after its insurance company withdrew cover.

Last month BTCV had to halt the work of two-thirds of its volunteers after its insurer Ecclesiastical withdrew cover. The insurer found that it was no longer insuring simple volunteer work now that BTCV’s volunteer work can include working at heights or underwater.

Ecclesiastical did give the charity notice, but BTCV was unable to find a substitute in time. Subsequently Zurich Municipal has agreed to insure many of the volunteer groups’ work.
