UK voluntary sector employs 2% of workforce

The UK voluntary sector employs 563,000 people, 2% of the national workforce, and contributes £5.4 billion to GDP, according to new research by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO). This makes it larger than the post and telecommunications sector.

NCVO also claims that the voluntary sector has created 85,000 new jobs in the last five years. However, this was disputed by public sector union Unison which claimed that many of the positions had simply transferred from the public to the voluntary sector.
