Oxford University is to introduce a new free e-mail address for life for alumni. Former students will be able to apply from 1st June for a free e-mail address such as jo******************@ox****.org.

Oxford University is to introduce a new free e-mail address for life for alumni. Former students will be able to apply from 1st June for a free e-mail address such as jo******************@ox****.org.

As well as offering a further service to its alumni this should also assist the University and its colleges in maintaining better contact with alumni. The University, of course, will retain a current e-mail address for all those alumni who sign up for it. This is a useful alternative should efforts to contact the former student by post fail.

Such an idea is not new. Durham University alumni instituted such a service in July 1999, and has 700 users so far. It has also developed an e-mail newsletter to 1,100 subscribers.
