Individuals use the Internet to fundraise for themselves

Howard Lake | 10 January 1997 | News

The Internet Beggar has beaten many UK charities to the draw by accepting online donations for himself.

“I promise not to put your donations to good use. I’ll probably use the money to feed one of the habits that helps keep me here on the streets. But hey, at least you will think your helping.” So says the Internet Beggar who, incidentally, is set up to receive electronic payment by ecash.

Ironic social comment? Make-money-quick scheme? Humour? It’s not fundraising as we know it but it’s worth considering how this might affect donors’ perception of genuine charitable fundraising on the Internet.
