Yesterday’s Virgin Money London Marathon was the biggest ever day for giving on the Virgin Money Giving platform.

£2.11m was donated through the site on Marathon day itself. This was the culmination of Virgin Money Giving’s biggest ever race week, which saw more than £8.2m in donations given in seven days leading up to race day on Sunday 3 October. This year, £19,916,886 has been raised for thousands of charities via the platform.

This includes some £1.9million raised for its charity of the year Macmillan Cancer Support, which was also the official charity partner of the London Marathon.

2021 is Virgin Money’s final year sponsoring the marathon. Over the last 12 years, marathon runners have raised a total of £237,297,578 for charity through its platform.

With its sponsorship of the London Marathon ending with this year’s event, Virgin Money Giving is to close next month. The fundraising platform was established in 2009, in parallel with Virgin Money’s sponsorship of the London Marathon. Virgin Money announced the decision in August, stating that given the investment required to stay competitive, and without the brand exposure provided by the event, it had decided to wind the platform down.
