With Marcus Missen leaving WaterAid after nine years to take up the post of Executive Director of Fundraising, Marketing and Communications at Leonard Cheshire, and Fiona McArthur-Worbey taking up the newly created post of Director of Fundraising and Engagement at POhWER, here are six recently announced charity moves.

Marcus Missen joins Leonard Cheshire as Executive Director of Fundraising

Marcus Missen is joining Leonard Cheshire as its new Executive Director of Fundraising, Marketing and Communications. He joins from WaterAid, where he is Director of Communications and Fundraising. During his nine years at WaterAid, Missen is credited with leading transformation of the charity’s brand and fundraising. He has been Chair of its Global Communications and Fundraising Executive since 2012. He is also currently Vice Chair of Bond UK’s Trustee Board, and chairs the advisory panel for The Resource Alliance. He has also been a trustee of the International Broadcasting Trust since 2018. Missen starts at Leonard Cheshire on 14 June.

Bethany Kinsella

Bethany Kinsella joins Greenhouse Sports as Director of Fundraising

Greenhouse Sports has appointed a new Director of Fundraising, Bethany Kinsella. Kinsella has been at Greenhouse Sports for more than three years and has been at the forefront of a number of fundraising initiatives, including the most recent gift of £1.5 million from Julia and Hans Rausing. She has also led the charity’s partnership with People’s Postcode Lottery, which celebrated its fifth year in 2020, with £2.67m raised by players to date. Prior to Greenhouse Sports Kinsella spent the last decade fundraising for causes including the Saracens Sport Foundation and Dallaglio RugbyWorks.

Mike Straney joins JDRF as UK Director of Fundraising & Engagement

JDRF has appointed Mike Straney as UK Director of Fundraising and Engagement. Straney joins JDRF from the RAF Benevolent Fund, where he was Director of Fundraising and Communications. Over the last 15 years he has held senior fundraising and partnerships roles across the charity sector, for organisations including Sightsavers, Breast Cancer Campaign and Marie Curie. Beginning his career in diabetes technology sales at Lifescan, he also has a strong knowledge of type 1 diabetes and the impact it can have on those living with the condition. Straney will lead on engaging with JDRF supporters throughout the UK to raise funds for type 1 diabetes research, and will also oversee JDRF’s corporate fundraising.

Chris Askew

New trustees for The National Academy for Social Prescribing

The National Academy for Social Prescribing (NASP) has appointed five new trustees to its board: Chris Askew OBE, Dr. Harry Brunjes, Brad Gudger, Sarah Metcalfe and Gay Palmer, who will work with its four existing trustees. The new trustees bring a wealth of expertise from the health, social, voluntary and community sectors:  Chris Askew OBE has been Chief Executive of Diabetes UK since 2015, Dr Harry Brunjes is Chair of the English National Opera and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, Brad Gudger is a Youth Expert Advisor for NHS England & NHS Improvement, a Young Leader for the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust and a One Young World Ambassador, Sarah Metcalfe was CEO of Playlist for Life and is currently Executive Director for the Iona Community, and Gay Palmer, a social prescribing link worker in East London and former nurse with over 20 years’ experience. 

Fiona McArthur-Worbey

Fiona McArthur-Worbey takes up Director of Fundraising and Engagement role at POhWER

Advocacy, information and advice charity POhWER, has strengthened its senior executive team with the appointments of Fiona McArthur-Worbey and Julie Born. The charity, which is led by Helen Moulinos, now has an executive team that is four-fifths women and a team of on-the-ground advocates – of whom 80% identify as female. Fiona McArthur-Worbey has been at POhWER for over 14 years, and takes on the newly created post of Director of Fundraising and Engagement. Leading a team of seven professionals in service design and development, she will oversee all activity involving public relations, social media, external communications, engagement, media and income generation. She first joined POhWER in 2006, working as a Community Advocate for over three years. Since then, she has worked her way up from Independent Mental Health Advocate and Project Manager at HertsHelp, to holding the position of Head of New Business for over six years. Joining her on the senior executive team is Julie Born, who has been appointed as the charity’s People Director.

Linda Edwards

SPANA appoints Linda Edwards as Chief Executive

SPANA has announced that Linda Edwards has been appointed as Chief Executive, taking up the role in August. Edwards has worked across the animal welfare, international development, humanitarian and commercial sectors, and is currently serving as Interim Chief Executive of the international development charity United Purpose. Her previous roles include Chief Executive of Build Africa and Executive Director of Operations at The Donkey Sanctuary. She was appointed as SPANA’s new Chief Executive following an independent search and selection process led by the Charity’s Board of Trustees.
