Melanie May | 26 September 2016 | News

The National Literacy Trust has launched Card to the Bard – an initiative to celebrate 400 years since Shakespeare’s death and raise funds for the charity.
A total of nearly 40 signed postcards, which include drawings, messages and cartoons, have been designed by actors, authors, artists and poets including Simon Callow, Emma Thompson and Julie Walters as the postcard they would send to the Bard in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of his death.

The collection also includes artwork from the Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell, cartoonist Banx, sculptor Antony Gormley, children’s illustrators Axel Scheffler and Michael Foreman, poet Wendy Cope and authors Terry Deary, Joanne Harris, Marcia Williams and Victoria Hislop.
The cards are being sold in an online auction at www.givergy.com/charity/national-literacy-trust, which launched on 22nd September. All bids must be placed by19.30 GMT on Wednesday 5th October.
National Literacy Trust director Jonathan Douglas said:

“Card to the Bard has inspired a cast of actors, authors and illustrators to create postcards which they would send to William Shakespeare. The postcards will be auctioned online to help raise vital funds for our work to raise literacy levels in the most deprived communities in the country.”
