Queens University launches new crowdfunding site for cancer research

Queens University Belfast has partnered with a number of local cancer charities to launch a new crowdfunding platform which initially hopes to raise nearly £100,000 for research.
ResearchFunderNI will allow small donations to support innovative early stage research projects, according to Queens. Professor Ken Mills of Queens Cancer Research Centre said crowdfunding could be important in supporting pilot projects which lead on to larger projects.

“Funding for small scale projects can be difficult to obtain and that’s why we’re using technology to create a platform in essence to digitally disrupt how funding for early stage cancer research is sourced,”

said Professor Mills.
Professor Mills said supporting small projects can speed up the introduction of new cancer drugs by up to 12 years. In exchange for donations the public will receive rewards such as invitations to Cancer Focus NI events and lab tours.
According to ResearchFunder NI’s website, if the minimum target for a particular project is not met the funds pledged by individuals are not drawn down.
