Macmillan construction industry partners support male cancer campaign

Six building and construction industry companies who already fundraise for Macmillan Cancer Support are also collaborating on an awareness raising campaign. This aims to ensure male employees and customers are aware of spotting the signs and symptoms of cancer early.
A survey for Macmillan of 1,088 people who work in this industry found that 43% of men would feel discouraged from talking about changes to their health such as a lump, a suspicious mole or pain, in case they were perceived as ‘making a fuss’. In addition, 22.9% would feel discouraged because they are too embarrassed.
The ‘Don’t Let Cancer Ruin Your Foundations’ campaign involves Travis Perkins, Benchmarx Kitchens & Joinery, Kier Group, Costain, Selco Builders Warehouse and Wolseley UK.
They will host Macmillan information and support resources in branches and on building sites. The aim is to raise awareness amongst employees and customers of the importance of reporting the signs and symptoms of cancer early, and to support this group to do so.

Fundraising partners

The companies are already fundraising partners of the charity. As such they will also fundraise for Macmillan next week on ‘Takeover Tuesday’ (Tuesday 10 May) as part of the campaign.
Chris Cunliffe, Chief Executive of Selco Builders Warehouse said:

“All of the companies taking part in the campaign are Macmillan Cancer Support fundraising partners and collectively we have raised over £1,570,000 for the charity. If this campaign helps just one man face his cancer fears and take control by seeing a doctor or talking about his concerns, then it will have been a success.”

Alix Wooding, Head of Corporate Partnerships at Macmillan Cancer Support added:

“It’s very exciting for Macmillan to be working across an entire sector and uniting businesses who would traditionally be competitors, in the name of providing vital support to people with worries about cancer”.
