Northern Ireland has 14,000 millionaires and some of the biggest charity supporters in the UK, according to new research by Barclay’s Wealth.

The number of people who qualify as millionaires in the North has increased by 40% in the last 15 years. The research is part of a new prosperity map published in the UK by Barclays.

Despite the fall in property values since 2007 Barclays says that the property market is one of the most significant sources of wealth for the rich in Northern Ireland.

The first Barclays UK Prosperity Map shows that Northern Ireland is the sixth most affluent part of the UK and has more millionaires than Wales or the North East of England.

Barclays measured wealth by average annual pay, the percentage of households giving to charity and business survival rates to create the map. At the other end of the scale, Northern Ireland has the lowest average income, at only £16,000 per head – less than half the £37,000 London rate.

The research found that 45% of households in Northern Ireland give to charity.
