National Gardens Scheme’s total for Macmillan reaches £15m
The National Gardens Scheme has now raised £15 million for Macmillan Cancer Support over the past 30 years. The NGS is Macmillan’s longest standing corporate partner and its largest single donor.
The record total was announced after the NGS gave £2.6 million this year to the charities it supports by opening more than 3,800 private gardens in England and Wales.
The money raised has funded over 150 Macmillan services to help make sure that no one faces cancer alone. These include financial advisers, clinical nursing specialists, and physiotherapists.
The partnership has also involved The NGS promoting Macmillan’s ‘Move More’ campaign that highlights how gentle exercise such as gardening can help reduce both the side effects of cancer treatment, and the risk of a cancer recurrence.
Last year The National Gardens Scheme donated £500,000 towards the creation of the first NGS Macmillan Wellbeing Centre in Southmead Hospital, Bristol. The centre provides services including information about cancer and its treatment, supported physical activity programmes and expert dietary and nutritional advice.
