Rory McIlroy pledges up to £500,000 for Mencap Northern Ireland
The Rory Foundation, the charitable foundation set up by world number one golfer Rory McIlroy, has pledged £250,000 for Mencap Northern Ireland with the possibility of a further £250,000 if they can match the donation.
The donation will go towards Mencap’s Big Step Forward appeal which is raising money for a new facility in Belfast for children with learning disabilities. Mencap launched the appeal in 2014 to raise £1.7million to build, equip and run the new centre by January 2016.
According to Mencap the appeal has raised £1.2 million so far. The second pledge of £250,000 will be provided by the Rory Foundation if the charity matches that sum from other sources.
Last year the Foundation donated £1 million to open a new support centre for children with cancer, Daisy Lodge in Newcastle, County Down, a therapeutic short-break centre.
At the end of May The Rory Foundation hosted the 2015 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at the Royal County Down Golf Club.
