New appointments for January 2015

Here is our round-up of new appointments in the fundraising and charity leadership sectors.

1. Jonathan O’Shea

Jonathan O'Shea
Jonathan O’Shea has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer at Tŷ Hafan, the hospice for children in Wales.
He joins from St John’s Hospital, an 840-year-old charity that provides almshouse accommodation, individual and community grants to disadvantaged people in Bath. During his time there, the charity modernised its almshouses in the city centre, increased grant giving from £170,000 to £700,000 per annum and introduced a £4 million social impact investment programme.

2. Jason Lewis

Jason Lewis
Jason Lewis, Partner and Head of Transaction Finance at Howard Kennedy, has been elected Chief Barker of Variety, the Children’s Charity, for 2015.
Variety’s organisational structure reflects its entertainment heritage by using titles traditionally associated with the circus. The post of Chief Barker is an annual appointment, running from 1 January to 31 December. It is the charity’s equivalent to chairman of its board of trustees.
Lewis has family connections with the entertainment industry. His mother was a noted actress and his father was managing director of famous cinema advertising giants Pearl & Dean. Jason’s uncles, Ernie and Dickie Pearl, of Pearl & Dean, were also long-term supporters of Variety and instrumental in setting it up in the UK.
Howard Kennedy has supported Variety for many years, sponsoring “the PROPS” lunch – the first awards programme for those working in the property and real estate industry, and now it its 24th year.
Lewis has been a trustee of Variety since 2010 and part of its management board, known as its “Crew”, since 2008.

3. Sarah Bryan

Sarah Bryan
Sarah Bryan is to join disability charity Leonard Cheshire Disability as Fundraising Director.
She has been working as a senior consultant with organisations including the Design Council and Oxfam. Before that she held senior fundraising posts in charities including The Salvation Army and Combat Stress, as well as being Chief Executive of fundraising agency, On Agency, for two years.
She takes up her new post at the end of January.

4. Abeer Macintyre

Former BBC broadcaster Abeer Macintyre has been appointed as Managing Director of fundraising and recruitment specialists Bruce Tait Associates.
The company has provided strategic recruitment and consultancy services to charities in Scotland for over a decade and have recently expanded into England and Ireland, with plans for Canada and further international expansion in the near future.
Macintyre said:

“When I left the BBC I vowed to devote the rest of my working life to helping charities to achieve their full potential to the benefit of our most vulnerable who rely on  their services.  This gives me an opportunity to help so many more at a time which charities are seriously challenged and need expert help to survive and thrive. “

She spent 20 years as a broadcast journalist, working on and presenting numerous news and current affairs programmes on radio and television for BBC Scotland.
After leaving the BBC, she worked as Head of Supporter Care for Mary’s Meals, Strategic Head of Fundraising for NSPCC Scotland and Director of Development at Children in Scotland.

5. Stephen Hale OBE

Refugee Action has appointed Stephen Hale OBE as its new Chief Executive. He joins from Oxfam International where he was Deputy Advocacy and Campaigns Director and starts with Refugee Action on 23 February 2015.
Before joining Oxfam, Stephen was Director of the UK charity Green Alliance. He has also worked as a special advisor to government ministers, focusing on climate change. Stephen is a trustee of Friends of the Earth, and was a Christian Aid trustee from 2007-10.
Hale replaces Dave Garratt who leaves Refugee Action after more than 15 years at the charity.

6. Phillip Caputo

Philip Caputo has been appointed as the new Executive Director of children’s sport and education charity Play for Change.
After several years of practicing law in the USA he became the Founding President and Executive Director of the Hello Friend Ennis William Cosby Foundation. He then became the Executive Director of the Gaia Kids Wellness Fund and Conscious Wave, where he addressed the nation’s childhood obesity epidemic through a variety of products and programmers.
As Executive Director for the Happy Hearts Fund, he helped raise millions of dollars to build over 100 schools in nine countries.

7. Emma Sambrook

Emma Sambrook
Emma Sambrook has been appointed as Executive Director of Fundraising at Hft, the charity that supports people with learning disabilities and their families.
She joins from the University of the West of England where she was Director of Development and Alumni Relations, creating the fundraising function from scratch.
Before that she was the Director of Fundraising and Development at the Calvert Trust. She has also worked as Chief Executive of KidsOut, which works with disadvantaged children and young people.
She is a trustee of the charity, Doorway, which provides an open access centre for those that are homeless in the North Wiltshire area. She has also co-authored a book on fundraising law and gives training on the subject for the Directory of Social Change.
The role as Executive Director of Fundraising at Hft was previously held by Jacqui Gwilliam, who died in May 2014.
