Parkrun chooses its first charity partner
Parkrun UK, the not-for-profit organisation that organise free, weekly timed runs in parks across the UK, has chosen Alzheimer’s Research UK as its first charity partner.
Over 590,000 runners have taken part in a park run at one or more of the 303 locations, with an average of 151 runners taking part in each one.
Parkrun UK chose Alzheimer’s Research UK after speaking to a number of charities last summer. Writing in this week’s email newsletter, Managing Director Tom Williams explained why they made their choice:
“Although Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity, they have a smaller presence in running than many of the charities we spoke with. We also felt we could make the biggest difference to Alzheimer’s Research UK and their goals and felt their message of regular exercise throughout our lives having a positive impact on our brain health fitted extremely well with our ethos”.
The charity has set up a microsite for the partnership, featuring details of how to support the charity and its other fundraising runs and events.
Parkrun’s weekly email newsletter will also feature a prominent advert inviting runners to sign up to take part in half-marathons and other running events and to raise money for the charity.
Ian Wilson, Director ofAlzheimer’s Research UK, thanked Parkrun in the email newsletter and indicated that the partnership would run over several years:
