One of Ireland’s top businessmen, JP McManus, is to donate €40 million to community initiatives in the midwest region of Ireland, according to a report in the Irish Times.
Between 2007 and 2012 Mr McManus donated €33 million to charities in Ireland through the JP McManus Charitable Trust. He has also organised a series of charity golf events which have raised around €100 million since the 1980s.
The distribution of the 40 million fund will be managed by Mr McManus’s daughter, Sue Foley.
“We are hoping to support vital community efforts to provide better economic and social futures at grassroots level and upwards,” said Ms Foley, who lives in County Limerick.
The new fund is a one-off initiative and will be managed as a sole entity independent of any existing programmes sponsored by Mr McManus, according to the Irish Times.
The principal activities of the JP McManus Charitable Trust are to provide relief from poverty, provide care and comfort to those who are terminally ill, alleviate distress in the areas of drug addiction, human rights and sexual and physical abuse and to support the provision of education and training.
Mr McManus doesn’t sit on the board of the foundation, but his wife, Noreen and his daughter, Sue-Ann Foley are directors.
According to the accounts up to 2013, the Limerick based foundation had €27 million in cash.
