A book of portraits of British soldiers injured in Iraq and Afghanistan will be published next month, with proceeds being donated to service charities including welfare charity SSAFA. The photos were taken by Bryan Adams and edited by ITN journalist Caroline Froggatt,
SSAFA’s Chief Executive Air Vice-Marshal, David Murray explained: “Bryan Adam’s photographs provide an unflinching account of the realities of modern warfare. The concept for this remarkable book originated with the opening of SSAFA‘s Norton House where we provide home from home support for the families of those undergoing rehabilitation at Headley Court. The very complex and ongoing needs of those injured as a result of their Service is only too apparent from the book and it is SSAFA’s commitment to provide that support for life.”
The charities that will benefit are BLESMA, Blind Veterans UK, Combat Stress, SSAFA and War Child.
One of those featured is Corporal Hannah Campbell, 28, from Winchester. She was injured in Iraq when a mortar came through the roof of the Guard Room she was in. It detonated directly beneath her causing the building to collapse and badly damage her leg. She waited three years before deciding to have leg amputated and is now going through rehabilitation as an amputee. She has no plans to leave the army.
Wounded: Legacy of War is published on 11 November by Steidl. It features over 100 photos of 40 injured veterans.
