JustGiving creates online donation service for Funeral Directors

Howard Lake | 18 September 2013 | News

JustGiving has developed a new service for Funeral Directors to enable them to enable their clients to make donations online before or after a funeral. Funeral Donations by JustGiving is designed to simplify funeral giving and, by moving away from cash and cheques in envelopes, to maximise Gift Aid for the recipient charities.

JustGiving says that more than £91 million is given in donations at funerals in the form of cash donations. This results in a loss of an estimated £25 million in unclaimed Gift Aid.

With 600,000 funerals each year in the UK, the potential to increase Gift Aid on funeral donations alone is substantial.

In memory pages

Funeral Directors can now set up in-memory pages for their clients on Funeral Donations by JustGiving at no extra cost. As well as making it an easier way to give, it will help reduce the administrative burden on Funeral Directors who until now have had to handle all the cash donations.

They might even increase the totals raised at funerals in that friends and family who can not attend the funeral can still donate and send messages via the in-memory page.

Last month the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) announced the Gift Aid 25 campaign to encourage online giving at funerals.

Duncan Dunlop, Head of Business Development at JustGiving, said: "The ability to raise funds for good causes in memory of a lost loved one isn’t a new idea, but using technology we can make it much easier and more effective."
