The Virgin Money London Marathon has chosen blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan as its Official Charity partner for the 2014 Virgin Money London Marathon. The announcement comes as the charity marks its 40th anniversary.

The charity hopes that its runners will raise £1 million at the event, which will help it fund the recruitment of 10,000 new bone marrow donors, specifically men aged 16-30 who are the most likely to become lifesavers.

Henny Braund, Anthony Nolan’s Chief Executive, said: "It costs £100 to add each person to the register, so the £1 million we hope to raise through the Virgin Money London Marathon partnership will give people with blood cancer the chance of life."

Runners who missed out on the ballot for places at next year's London Marathon, which was filled in record time on 29 April, can still apply for one of Anthony Nolan's guaranteed marathon places.

Anthony Nolan's Virgin London Marathon microsite

The charity has created a microsite to make the most of its Official Charity partner status. It has been built by TDA, following a three-way pitch.

The site aims to recruit runners for the charity's 400 guaranteed Golden Bond places, or to use their own ballot places to support the charity. The site encourages runners to 'cure blood cancer, mile by mile'.

The site features training and fundraising resources. It also invites them to join the Team Anthony Nolan online community where they can share their stories with other runners.

Mary Campbell, Head of Events at Anthony Nolan, said: "With a fundraising income of an estimated £1 million, it is essential to ensure our runners feel inspired and involved in this iconic event."

Past official charities of Virgin London Marathon

The 2013 Official Charity partners were YouthNet and Age UK. Before that it was Team PB the Prostate Cancer Charity and Breast Cancer Care, and in 2011 it was Oxfam.

Indeed, the London Marathon organisers have announced an official Charity Partner since the race was first run in 1984.
