The State of Giving Research in Europe provides an overview of current philanthropic research in Europe. This overview gives much-anticipated insights into the study of philanthropy (private action for the public good) in twelve European countries (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom).

This publication shows that there are many individual researchers and academic institutions in different countries invested in the study of philanthropy. For most countries, both population surveys and aggregated data on giving are available. These data sources are used to provide key statistics on philanthropy in Europe. The State of Giving Research in Europe shows that there is a bright future for the study of philanthropy in Europe.

The State of Giving Research in Europe is the first publication by the European Research Network on Philanthropy (ernop). Ernop was initiated in 2007 and currently has thirty-five members in fifteen European countries. ernop aims to advance, coordinate and promote excellence in philanthropic research in Europe.
