Irish Cancer Society most popular for donations

Research by Fundraising Ireland has identified which charities and causes in the Republic of Ireland are most favoured by the public.

Causes related to health, especially cancer, were the most popular for donations at 26% of all donations while the Irish Cancer Society was the most popular health charity with 8% of donors saying they made a recent donation.

Local charities were the most popular with 26% claiming to have given money recently. Of all local charities, St Vincent De Paul came out on top at 20% of  donations. St Vincent de Paul was also the most favoured during the crucial Christmas period, attracting donations from 36% of respondents but this may be a product of the survey’s timing which asked people whom they had donated to the previous three months.

The survey showed that donations were unplanned and predominantly made through church gate and street collections.  Twenty four percent of those surveyed said they donated through door-to-door collections, with a similar number donating by direct debit.

Of overseas charities, Concern was the most popular at 11% of donors while Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital received under 10% of donations.

The research was revealed at Fundraising Ireland’s conference in Dublin last week.
