Institute of Fundraising celebrates 30th anniversary

The Institute of Fundraising, the national professional membership body for fundraisers, is 30 years old today.

Originally, the Institute of Charity Fundraising Managers (ICFM), the Institute of Fundraising has helped transform the standards and reputation of professional fundraising in the past three decades. As well as its training and membership services, including the recent Academy, it has helped develop codes of practice, spawned self-regulatory bodies such as the Fundraising Standards Board, and influenced government policy on charitable giving and fundraising issues such as the phasing out of cheques and the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme.

Chief Executive Peter Lewis said: “I am proud to say that the Institute of Fundraising (IoF) is 30 years-old today. The IoF, or the Institute of Charity Fundraising Managers as it was then known, was formally established by a group of committed volunteers coming together to share their expertise and give fundraisers a voice. Some of those people are still well-known in the sector – Richard Radcliffe (St John Ambulance), Giles Pegram (NSPCC) and Judith Rich OBE. And there are many other unsung heroes who gave their time selflessly to get us set up.”

The Institute now has over 5,300 individual fundraiser members and 350 charities that between them bring in over £6 billion towards good causes every year.

Last year it developed the new Code of Fundraising Practice, combining all the various fundraising codes it had helped create over the years.

This year the Institute will launch the first ever internationally recognised Advanced Diploma in Fundraising.

Lewis added: “Thirty years on our members and volunteers remain at the heart of the Institute’s work. And, today I’d like to take the opportunity to thank all the Institute’s thousands of members and volunteers past and present for their huge commitment to what we are today, and what we hope to do tomorrow.

He quoted Judith Rich, who said: “To look back 30 years is a formidable challenge, but to do so measured against the success that has been achieved during that time brings immense pride in our profession.”
