Microdonations charity Pennies raises £1 million

Microdonations charity Pennies has now raised £1 million for partner charities. It has generated over four million individual donations averaging 25p each from customers topping up their payment in shops and online with a small donation.

The number of donations has doubled in the past eight month, aided by the growth in the number of merchant partners, including DFS, Monarch Airlines and The Fragrance Shop joining the movement. Shoppers were particularly generous in December, with a record weekly total of £32,000 made in the week before Christmas.

Alison Hutchinson, CEO of The Pennies Foundation, said: “We have been delighted to see how quickly and easily the public have embraced micro-donations and donated via Pennies… We look forward to seeing that £1,000,000 figure quickly increase, as more retailers switch on Pennies and more charities benefit."

Pennies has supported 50 charities so far, both large and small. Toy shop chain The Entertainer began offering Pennies to customers in August 2011. Since then customer donations have exceeded £275,000 in support of four children’s hospitals.

Pennies is available in a range of national retailers as well as many local merchants and charity shops.
