William Shawcross to be new Charity Commission Chair

William Shawcross CVO has been appointed as the new Chair of the Charity Commission for England and Wales, succeeding Dame Suzi Leather who served in that role from for six years from August 2006.
The writer and broadcaster takes up his role on 1 October 2012. His appointment was recommended by the Public Administration Select Committee following a pre-appointment hearing. A journalist and war correspondent for The Sunday Times, Shawcross has experience in the areas of human rights and international aid, having served Chairman of Article 19 from 1986 to 1996 and as a member of the Council of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) from 1997 to 2002.
He has been appointed for three years, with the possibility of re-appointment for a second term. The role is for two days per week, at £50,000 per year.
