County Durham Community Foundation receives £1m donation

Howard Lake | 7 September 2012 | News

Investment banker Jonathan Ruffer and his wife Jane have donated £1 million to the County Durham Community Foundation to help tackle social deprivation and create jobs in the area. This is the largest single donation that the Foundation has received in its 17 year history.
The Ruffers did not attach any conditions to the grant, such as indicating how it should be spent. Although no grantmaking details have been announced, it is expected that grants from the donation will be available to community groups and individuals, and will be for small amounts.
The Ruffers have already shown their commitment to the area by donating £15 million to save the 12 Zurbaran paintings from leaving Bishop Auckland, and they are also funding the restoration of Auckland Castle.
