Anonymous donor gives two £10m donations to cancer research projects

Cancer Research UK and the University of Southampton have each received a donation of £10 as an anonymous gift from one of CRUK’s supporters. For both organisations this is the largest single donation that they have ever received.
The donation to CRUK is for it’s Create The Change campaign, which aims to raise £100 million for the Francis Crick Institute in London, due to open in 2015. It is the largest capital campaign that Cancer Research UK has run. It is also the first campaign for which the charity is actively seek donations from donors outside the UK.
The £10 million donation to Southampton will help to build a cancer immunology centre that will have links to the Francis Crick Institute. It too will open in 2015.
Professor Peter Johnson, Cancer Research UK’s chief clinician who is also based at the University of Southampton, said: “These two donations will transform our ability to move new immune treatments for cancer from the laboratories in the Francis Crick Institute to patients, through the new cancer immunology centre in Southampton”.
Professor Don Nutbeam, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, spoke of “an extraordinary act of generosity by a very special individual”.
