Nottingham students raise over £1.3 million for good causes
Karnival, the University of Nottingham Students’ Union’s charitable organisation, has raised over £1.3 million for local and national charities during 2011.
The grand total of £1,322,249.57 was announced to the 900 guests at the charity’s annual Snowflake Ball this month.
In 2009 ‘Karni’ became the first RAG society to raise over £1 million for charity in a single year. This year’s total was raised via a large number of sponsored events including trekking the Machu Picchu Inca Trail in Peru, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, and walking along the Great Wall of China, together with traditional fundraising activities such as rag raids and club nights.
This year’s money will now be distributed to the regional and national branches of charities including the Royal National Institute of Blind People, Age UK, The British Legion, and The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.
The University of Nottingham Students’ Union’s has over 35,800 members on campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia, and it claims to run the oldest Student Community Action (now the Student Volunteer Centre), which has around 3,000 students participating in over 120 projects.
After the ball, Karnival Director, Chris Bowman, said: “Thanks to every student who has participated; you really have made a difference to lives this Christmas.”
