Giant egg hunt in London aims to raise £2m for two charities

Over 200 large decorated eggs will be hidden around central London next year as part of an attempt to raise £1 million each for Elephant Family and Action for Children. The Big Egg Hunt will begin on Shrove Tuesday, 21 February 2012, and last for 40 days.
Each 2.5 foot fibreglass egg will be individually decorated by leading artists, designers, architects and jewellers. Participants in the hunt can use a map or a mobile app to follow clues to find the eggs. Participants will pay a small fee to take part. At the end of The Big Egg Hunt the eggs will be auctioned to raise funds for the charities.
The hunt was inspired by last year’s Elephant Parade which saw 260 decorated glass fibre elephants appear across London.

Mark Shand, founder of Elephant Family, told The Evening Standard that he was ‘thrilled’ when Action for Children suggested that the two charities work together on the project. “It’s great because it’s children and animals” he commented.
Artists already involved include Faberge, Vivienne Westwood, Chapman Brothers, Marc Quinn, Zandra Rhodes, Theo Fennel, Polly Morgan and Diane von Furstenburg. The organisers are also inviting other companies to sponsor and design eggs.
