New advice published on handling cash and other donations

The Institute of Fundraising has published a new code of fundraising practice covering the handling of cash and other financial donations, including debit cards, cheques, and tax-effective giving. The Handling of Cash and Other Financial Donations Code of Fundraising Practice replaces the existing Handling of Cash Donations Code of Fundraising Practice.
The Code is designed to help guide organisations in producing their own procedures to help protect themselves from fraud, theft or embezzlement, and to protect staff or volunteers from accusations of dishonesty or the temptation to commit fraud. By sharing this best practice, the Institute aims to help reassure donors that their donations and gifts will be used for the purpose for which they were given.
Sarah Tirrell, Policy and Codes of Practice Manager at the Institute of Fundraising, said: “As fundraisers, we know that donations don’t begin and end with cash, although this to ‘save our cheque’ illustrates the importance of the diverse donation methods which exist; and this new Code also shows the variety of ways in which donors now support charity. We’re keen to ensure our ./guidance continues to follow giving trends as closely as possible.”
