Another chance to have your say about the future of cheques

Howard Lake | 27 April 2011 | Blogs

If your charity is concerned about moves to phase out cheques by 2018 and the impact it could have on donations, you have another opportunity to express these as the Commons Treasury Select Committee is reopening its inquiry on this issue.
The Payments Council had argued that cheques were in “terminal decline” but the Committee it seems wasn’t convinced by this. The Council has done some more research and the re–opening of the inquiry is designed to analyse their latest conclusions.
Specifically the Committee is seeking written evidence on the following:
* trends over time in the use of cheques as a payment mechanism, including estimates of likely usage over the next five to ten years
the advantages and disadvantages of abolition, including the impact of abolition on particular groups in society
* analysis of the likely costs and benefits of the abolition of cheques
* progress in the development of suitable alternative payment mechanisms
* the decision to close the Cheque Guarantee Scheme and the implications for cheque usage and the future of cheques
Written evidence on these issues should be sent to the Committee by 12 noon on 6 May 2011.
