Tesco staff and customers raise £7.2 million to smash fundraising target for CLIC Sargent
Tesco staff and customers have raised a record £7.2 million to help leading children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent, Tesco Charity of the Year 2010, pioneer new ways of caring for children with cancer.
The UK’s largest annual corporate charity partnership, which ended in February 2011, has exceeded all expectations to raise the highest income it has ever recorded, substantially surpassing the original fundraising target of £5 million.
Every day, 10 children in the UK are told they have cancer. Although survival rates are over 70%, cancer remains the single largest cause of death from disease in children in the UK.

The incredible sum raised will help fund CLIC Sargent specialist nurses at every children’s cancer centre across the UK. The nurses will act as key workers and coordinate all the children’s care in hospital and in the community. This will change the way children are cared for and allow them to spend more time at home and less time in hospital.

The money raised will allow CLIC Sargent to make a huge difference to the quality of the every day lives of children with cancer and their families. “Smashing the £5 million target will not only allow us to establish key worker roles to help us coordinate care for children with cancer. The additional £2.2 million raised will provide local support and care for over 500 more families. This includes financial help to meet extra costs, free accommodation close to treatment centres and practical and emotional support for the whole family.”
