Rising scrap metal prices boost income for charities from donated cars

Howard Lake | 24 January 2011 | News

The rising price of light iron, the main material component of cars, should benefit charities in whose names cars are donated, according to car donation service Giveacar. Last month the price rose by almost 25%, according to the not-for-profit social enterprise.
Giveacar, established 12 months ago, arranges the scrappage of old and unwanted vehicles at Authorised Treatment Centres across the country. The “vast majority of the proceeds accrued” by the scrappage are then given to the donor’s charity of choice. The scheme has already raised more than £250,000 for participating charities. So far it has processed more than 2,000 cars for salvage or scrap, and 200 charities have joined its scheme.
Tom Chance, Director of Giveacar, commented on the price rise: “It has… helped us to grow our scheme and benefit the charity sector in a much bigger way. We would urge anyone with a large hunk of metal to get rid of to find out the value before giving it away. If it’s a car, come to us and we’ll turn it into a donation to charity.”
