The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVP) in Ireland has received a welcome boost for its Annual Appeal with a €1 million donation from power company ESB.

SVP National President, Mairead Bushnell said: “We are delighted to accept this donation from ESB. It will help make a real and valuable difference to families and individuals who are struggling in these tough times.

“ESB has a long history of working with SVP with particular focus on helping and advising consumers on staying well and warm over the winter months,” she added.

Ms Bushnell described the overall response to its Annual Appeal as ‘generous.’ In November SVP warned that online donations were down 30%.

St. Vincent de Paul is the largest direct non-profit charitable organisation in Ireland with an annual income of around €60 million in 2008. The figures for 2008 showed that the charity raised €13.4 million from donations.
