Barcamp Nonprofits is a result of conversations between Howard Lake, Steve Bridger and myself this summer. Using their experience in social media combined with great understanding of the sector we are suggesting a new format for events to promote free access to social media expertise and forum for smaller, but also great developments.

First event is planned for 20th of November and will be happening at the Oxford University Club. The so called “unconference” or “barcamp” is basically a series of free workshops with moderators (traditionally called ‘speakers’) who will provide starting points for the discussion as well as their experience in various areas of social media and IT. We have invited specialists of WordPress, Drupal, microblogging, content creation, social media marketing, social media measurement, on-line fundraising but also people who lead really interesting projects already to provide our attendees both with theory, as well as practice. We will share case studies, discuss new trands but also work on a specific project to be conducted as a follow up to the event. During lunch time session we will invite our attendees to join few invited speakers for informal chat too.

Our sponsors – Voice, Oxford College of Marketing, JustGiving and Against Breast Cancer have already greatly contributed to the event and will continue to do so. Against Breast Cancer for example will present their new Twitter campaign featuring Twitter hashtags as discount codes for their on-line shop. We hope to learn more about it on the day! We will look at small steps in implementing social media within nonprofit organisations, as larger challenges like Twestival.
