The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD) has raised almost £200,000 in its first Summer Raffle.

The charity sent raffle tickets to 100,000 existing supporters this summer. Over 150,000 tickets were sold at £1 each, and the raffle attracted additional donations worth £40,000.

The first prize was a choice of £4,000 or solar panels for the winner’s home.

First prize went to a woman in Rotherham. She chose to accept the cash, saying it was an answer to her prayers and would help to fund her son’s lay missionary work in Zambia.

The second prize was £1,500 and 10 runners up won £100 each.

Holly Ball, Head of Fundraising and Marketing for CAFOD, said: “Our first raffle has been a huge success with only limited promotion, providing supporters with a light-hearted way to give and a chance to get their friends and family involved too. We see enormous potential for the next one as we develop our approach to promoting it more widely and attracting new supporters.”
