Donations to charity on plastic cards up by 18% in 2008

The UK Cards Association reports that the UK public gave £1.19 billion to charities on plastic cards during 2008, an increase of 18% on the £1.01 billion given in 2007.

The number of donations on debit cards increased by 16% (up from 13 million in 2007 to 15.1 million last year); and the number of credit card transactions rose 9% from 9.6 million in 2007 to 10.5 million last year.

Last year the total amount donated on credit and charge cards was £639.2 million and £546.9 million on debit cards.

The UK Cards Association suggested that one reason for this is that “many people donate online and this is one environment where more people prefer to use their credit card instead of a debit card”.

It added that it estimated that charity affinity cards had raised approximately £16.7 million during 2008, based on total spending of £6.7 billion on these cards in that year.
