Eye Surgery Specialist Raises £7,000 for Vision Aid Overseas

A team of colleagues from Ultralase, the UK’s longest-established laser eye surgery specialist, have completed the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for Vision Aid Overseas. The team of seven, headed by Chief Executive Tony Veverka, successfully completed the climb in just under 24 hours, with 15 minutes to spare!

The demanding Three Peaks Challege, which took place on 13th June, involved climbing Ben Nevis, Scarfell Pike and Snowdon all within 24 hours, covering a grueling 25 miles and 3,000 vertical meters.

The Ultralase team embarked on the climb in support of Vision Aid Overseas, which is dedicated to helping people in the developing world whose lives are blighted by poor eyesight. It funds teams of volunteer optometrists, along with dispensing opticians, who travel abroad to set up clinics, screen large numbers of patients and provide appropriate spectacles.

The charity is close to the hearts of the team from Ultralase, not least because of their experience and dedication to the importance of eye-sight. To date the team have collected over £7,000 for the charity, with sponsorship still being collected.

The team trained for over six months to prepare for the challenge, with fellow colleagues providing tips and advice in the run up to the climb with suggestions ranging from ‘carrying plenty of water’ to ‘covering their feet in Vaseline’ – just like Paula Radcliffe!

Tony Veverka, Chief Executive at Ultralase commented: “We really enjoyed the challenge, not only was it a great team-building exercise, but we are proud to have raised money for such an important cause. We’re now looking to our next big charity challenge, and are thinking about taking on Mt Kilimanjaro in 2010.”

With 30 clinics in the UK and Ireland, Ultralase has over 18 years experience in laser eye treatment. The company prides itself in being the only national vision correction specialist in Britain to ensure every surgeon is certified by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
