Data Protection

The May 2009 edition of the Information Commissioner’s (ICO) e-newsletter has just arrived, and as usual, includes a few interesting snippets.

The Consulting Association was closed down and informed that the ICO would prosecute them for not having an entry on the data protection register. The Consulting Association was in the news recently for developing a database containing details on over 3,000 construction workers which was used by over 40 construction companies to vet individuals for employment. The information included sensitive personal information on construction workers’ personal relationships, trade union activity, etc.

A number of Primary Care Trusts and NHS Trusts have been investigated, often for the loss of laptops, and a number of businesses were fined for not being registered, including three firms of solicitors!

Make sure that you are registered, check out the guidelines (ICO, Institute of Fundraising, and Researchers in Fundraising), and be careful with those laptops and memory sticks.
