Edge signed as ambassador for Mencap
U2’s guitarist, The Edge, has signed up to become an ambassador for the UK learning disability charity, Mencap.
The star will help the charity with fundraising, raising awareness and campaigning against discrimination.
He said: “Not many people know what a learning disability is, or the challenges people with a learning disability face. I’ve seen how much work goes into Mencap and want to continue to see it flourish.”
The Edge, otherwise known as David Evans, took the position following his appearance at Mencap’s Little Noise Sessions held at the Union Chapel, north London, in November 2008.
Bono, leader singer of the band, and The Edge, delighted fans when they made the surprise appearance at the gig playing an unannounced four-song set for the audience of 250.
He then stood in as guest compere for Jo Whiley at a Mencap gig later that month.

He was invited to take part in the gigs by his cousin Ciara Evans, who has a learning disability and has worked for Mencap as campaigns and celebrity assistant since 1999.
