Starbucks Bookdrive 2008 gets underway

Howard Lake | 9 December 2008 | News

Starbucks coffee houses are once again inviting the public to donate new books to its annual Starbucks Bookdrive in partnership with the National Literacy Trust (NLT). Since it began in 2002, over 430,000 books have been given via the scheme to help bring the benefits of reading to children in local primary schools.
The bookdrive runs until 6 January 2009. Starbucks is urging the public to donate any new children’s books. Every book donated will be distributed to children across the UK via a link-up between Starbucks coffee houses and local primary schools.
Starbucks and the National Literacy Trust have been working together since 2001 with the aim of supporting communities by promoting the value of reading from an early age. This year Starbucks stores are distributing sample books of “Teach Your Granny To Text & Other Ways to Change the World“, featuring simple, everyday ideas that children can do to tackle issues ranging from climate change and social exclusion to obesity and animal rights.
According to charity Booktrust, the average primary school library in the UK spends £10.25 per head on books per year. Statistics from PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study 2007) show that nearly one in ten (8%) primary school aged children in the UK don’t have any books at home.
