BBC Children in Need raises £20,991,216 on the night
BBC Children in Need had last night raised £20,991,216 by the end of its seven-hour telethon. The figure, higher than last year’s total and a record for the appeal, suggests that the credit crunch and recession have still not had an impact on public and corporate giving for this high-profile cause at least.
Presented by Terry Wogan, Tess Daly and Fearne Cotton, this year’s campaign theme was “Do Something Different”.
BBC Radio 2 listeners helped raise £2 million, with one anonymous caller bidding £100,000 in the Auction Of Things Money Can’t Buy for a guitar master class with Mark Knopfler.

Last year’s campaign raised £19,089,771 on the night, going on to reach a total of £37 million. This year’s total therefore is likely to pass that figure.
Since 1990 the appeal has now raised over half a billion pounds.
The next closing date for applications for funding from BBC Children in Need is 15 January 2009. The charity awards grants to organisations working with children aged 18 and under who have mental, physical or sensory disabilities; behavioural or psychological disorders; are living in poverty or situations of deprivation; or suffering through distress, abuse or neglect.
